“Treading Lightly” to Protect Our Planet

April 22, 2015 / By Craig Bushey
You’re driving your four-wheel vehicle off the beaten path, tearing through brush, kicking up broken gravel. The scenery is beautiful, your lungs are full with fresh air, and you can feel the adrenaline kicking in.

What could matter more than this moment?

About 20 plus years ago, a few major auto manufacturers addressed that question by introducing the following term to their marketing campaigns: “tread lightly.”

Those two little words allowed the industry to deliver a basic, yet essential message to their customers: Something as simple as driving your vehicle from here to there is impactful in ways beyond which you can see — Be mindful of the condition of your surroundings, both before and after you travel them.

Protecting our Planet

At Kennametal, you could say we hit a similar “Aha Moment” of our own by questioning what we could do, as a global organization, to improve the way daily manufacturing operations impact the environment around us.

Within a six-year span, we developed an answer.

In 2007, we launched our largest environmental initiative to-date,  Protecting Our Planet.

By 2013, Protecting Our Planet inspired the execution of 200+ projects, ranging anywhere from implementing energy reduction, to cutting waste, to reducing overall emissions, to finally, leaving a positive impact on over 80 communities globally.

We’re All In This Together

“Treading lightly” can certainly be easier said, than done, but why not at least give it a try? After all, the overall concept can be applied to any corporation, small business, or even individual mindset.

At Kennametal, improving the way we utilize energy and other natural resources in our manufacturing operations is one way we’re working to Protect Our Planet. While discovering ways to promote the recovery of vital materials, is another.

Our leaders believe that contributing positively to society means abiding by the commitment to not only acknowledge what is right, but to do what is right, too.
