Safe-Lock by Haimer Prevents End Mill Pull-Out

December 8, 2011 / By The Chronicle

A common machining – and safety – problem in high-speed applications is the pull-out effect the high forces create on the end mill. These extreme forces seem to engage in a tug-of-war with the end mill, trying to extract it from the toolholder. A loose tool could spell disaster for the application as well as the machine operator.

The new Safe-Lock by Haimer pull-out protection system guards against unexpected end mill pull-out from the holder. It’s designed especially for heavy-duty machining, where pull-out risk is high.

The Safe-Lock system features a series of spiral grooves ground into the cutting tool shank. Combine these grooves with the pin drivers in a shrink fit toolholders and the result is a secure holding system that keeps the end mill in place. Think of it as a seatbelt for the cutting tool.

When heavy-duty machining materials like titanium, Inconel, and aluminum, the pull-out risk is eliminated while the safety factor is greatly increased. Better productivity, less scrap, and less vibration all combine to your benefit with Safe-Lock.

Traditional clamping methods were the shrink fit and Weldon systems, but both had drawbacks. The Safe-Lock pull-out prevention system combines the best features of these traditional methods, including a frictional shrink fit and interlocking connection of toolholder and cutting tool. This results in excellent run-out and no tool pull-out risk.

The pull-out effect in high-speed applications create high forces on the end mill and because of that end mill may come out with force from tool holder. Sometime it causes accident so always take precaution while working on high speed machine make sure you have wore gloves and mask. and because of extraction some times end mill loose its sharpness and become dull and in this case generally people throw that end mill in waste and buy new one, but now there are a lot of equipments which will help you in reusing your end mill so that you can save money which you were about to waste in purchasing a new end mill.
