Kennametal CEO Carlos Cardoso has addressed the image problems manufacturing in the US has according to the American public. Read more about it here from our friends at Manufacturing Engineering.
By way of introduction, for the past 20 years I have been representing Kennametal-Stellite Koblenz in Israel. In November I shall be 80 years old and I haved loved every day that I have spent in manufacturing. I am a “Fellow of the Institute of Cast Metals Engineers (U.K.)” and have spent most of my working life in the foundry or a casting environment. I will work until the Lord takes me. Mr. Cardoso’s fine article has failed to stress one important word. STATUS . Youngsters are drawn to the Hi-Tech related industries because there is STATUS in these vocations. The leaders in the manufacturing industries must find ways to make their enterprises “sexy” to today’s youngsters.
Thank you for your comment, Eli. You serve as a great example that manufacturing can provide a lucrative career and is actually a desirable and motivating industry in which to work!
I agree with you that in addition to changing the perceptions of manufacturing and advocating for policy change, we need to find a way to highlight that there is status in these jobs and we are trying to do just that. Highlighting examples like yours about people who have spent their life in manufacturing, making the real world possible every day, and telling their stories will help raise awareness.
Drawing attention to the salaries associated with these jobs is also important because it gives our youth insight into what kind of life is possible for them and one with status is certainly an option. I believe that by positioning manufacturing as the new IT – industrial technology – we are appealing to a whole new generation.
For this generation, everything is mobile, the latest technology is king, they embrace social media and value corporate community involvement – all things that manufacturing companies can offer. As manufacturers we just need to do a better job of telling the story.
Thanks again for your comment!
